Unclaimed Property
The McLennan County Treasurer's Office works to return unclaimed money to the rightful
owners. Unclaimed funds may be the result of a check being returned to the
county as undeliverable or a check that has not been cashed after a certain period
of time. Money is considered unclaimed when it has been abandoned by the owner
for one or more years.
The County Treasurer's Office administers the unclaimed property. Property
is turned over to the Treaurer’s office annually when the owner's whereabouts are
unknown and the property has been inactive on the books of the reporting agency
or department for the appropriate period of time. Any unclaimed funds received
by the Treasurer are deposited into the County's general fund and reported to the
Auditor's Office. The Auditor's Office is responsible for maintaining the
funds in a separate accounting fund.
The County is required to report all unclaimed or abandoned personal property exceeding
$100 to the Texas State Comptroller on an annual basis. The reports are due
as of November 1, and include balances from June 30 of the previous year.
If the amount of unclaimed or abandoned property is less than $100, the money is
kept by the county in a separate accounting fund. Amounts under $10 are not
kept separate and are transferred to the County's General Fund each year.
There are specific procedures involved to ensure the money is delivered to the appropriate
owner. If you have any questions concerning unclaimed funds that are being
held by McLennan County, please please feel free to contact the Treasurer's Office.
